From La Prairie to Sainte-Julie: the Highway 30 route and a model home visit

Interested in a new semi-detached home near La Prairie, but the distance gives you pause? It is worth looking at squarely, with numbers in hand.

This article describes the drive from La Prairie to Sainte-Julie as calculated by OSRM, a routing engine built on OpenStreetMap data. Starting point: La Prairie city hall at 170 boulevard Taschereau. Destination: Geoffrion Street in the Vilamo neighbourhood, home to BÉAcité's model homes and sales office. The result: 33.4 km by road for 24.8 km as the crow flies, and about 30 minutes behind the wheel.

Those times assume a clear road; at rush hour, the trip takes longer. Treat them as benchmarks, not promises.

From La Prairie to Sainte-Julie: the most direct route

This is the route the calculation suggests right away. It comes down to four steps:

  1. take chemin de Saint-Jean, numbered Route 104, for about 2.8 km, then a very short stretch of route Édouard-VII, as far as interchange 62 on Highway 30;
  2. head east on Highway 30, known as the Autoroute de l'Acier, for about 20.4 km: it runs through Brossard, Longueuil's Saint-Hubert borough, Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville and Boucherville;
  3. at interchange 83, join Highway 20 East, the Autoroute Jean-Lesage, for about 6.3 km, almost all of it within Sainte-Julie;
  4. leave it at exit 105, the Route 229 exit, then follow rue Bernard-Pilon, montée des Quarante-Deux and avenue des Bâtisseurs, which leads onto Geoffrion Street.

Driving time by part of town

From one La Prairie neighbourhood to another, the difference is small. Still without traffic:

  • Vieux-La Prairie, from the Nativité church: 33.9 km, about 31 minutes;
  • boulevard de La Magdeleine, in the Grand Boisé area: 32.7 km, about 29 minutes;
  • La Prairie terminus, avenue du Golf: 32.1 km, about 30 minutes;
  • Symbiocité neighbourhood: 31.8 km, about 27 minutes.

On the way back, from Geoffrion Street to city hall, the same route in reverse comes to 32.5 km and about 29 minutes. Highway 20 West branches off toward Highway 30 at exit 98, and Highway 30 brings you back into La Prairie at exit 62.

A longer drive than elsewhere, and a riverside alternative

There is no point dressing it up: compared with other South Shore towns, La Prairie is far from Vilamo. Geoffrion Street is about 28 km from Chambly and about 26 km from Carignan, against 33 km here. On the plus side, the route is simple: one long highway stretch, then a few minutes of local streets.

For the return trip, a second route follows the river:

  • Highway 20 West from exit 105, for about 14 km;
  • exit 90, then the Autoroute René-Lévesque, which carries both the 20 and 132 numbers, for about 16.7 km through Boucherville, Longueuil, Saint-Lambert and Brossard;
  • boulevards Marie-Victorin, Matte, Rivard and Taschereau back to city hall.

The bottom line: 37.1 km and about 32 minutes without traffic, barely more than via Highway 30.

Two possible stops along the way

The main route passes within about 500 metres of Quartier DIX30 in Brossard and of Promenades Saint-Bruno. The Vilamo website actually lists them among its nearby destinations. DIX30 is about 11 minutes from La Prairie city hall. Note, however, that it is not next door to Vilamo: from Geoffrion Street, allow about 25 minutes.

What about commuting to Montreal?

In the 2021 Census, 65.1% of La Prairie commuters worked outside the Roussillon regional county municipality. Those figures date from May 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, but they show that driving is already part of daily life.

Some candour is in order: moving to Sainte-Julie takes you farther from downtown Montreal. Without traffic, Central Station is about 20 minutes from La Prairie city hall, over the Samuel-De Champlain Bridge, and about 33 minutes from Geoffrion Street, over the Jacques-Cartier Bridge. If your job is downtown, run the numbers for your own schedule.

Before deciding, also compare what living in Sainte-Julie or La Prairie means day to day: services, parks, transit and institutions are not the same.

From La Prairie to Sainte-Julie by public transit

Without a car, the trip takes some planning. According to exo's official schedules, no route links the two towns directly. On weekdays, you can transfer at the Longueuil terminus:

  • route 550 leaves the La Prairie terminus at 7:05 a.m. and reaches the Longueuil terminus at 7:21 a.m.;
  • route 350 leaves Longueuil at 7:25 a.m. and arrives at the Sainte-Julie terminus at 7:46 a.m., about 41 minutes from terminus to terminus;
  • a second pairing, the 7:45 a.m. 550 followed by the 8:15 a.m. 350, arrives at 8:36 a.m.

After that, nothing: no route 350 departures toward Sainte-Julie between 8:15 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays, and no connection from La Prairie on weekends. The Sainte-Julie terminus is also 5.8 km from Geoffrion Street, a stretch served on weekdays by the T34 taxibus, by reservation. For a visit, driving is the realistic option. Once you live there, though, you will find something familiar in Sainte-Julie: a free local bus.

Visiting the model home

At the end of the road, the sales office welcomes you at 435 Geoffrion Street. The house at 423 is a three-bedroom Duo with a custom cellar for wine lovers, an open office and a finished basement; it can be toured by reservation, as can the homes at 405, 408 and 435.

Visiting hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.;
  • Evenings, Saturday and Sunday: by appointment.

Once on Highway 20, take exit 105 and follow the signs for the Vallée-du-Richelieu golf club, then the BÉAcité project signs. To book, write to ventes@beacite.com or contact Eddy Guessous, sales director, at 514-812-9633 by call or text.

Living in a condo? During the visit, look at what a garage, a basement and a yard would change for you: our article on the move from condo to semi-detached home near La Prairie covers it in full.

Conclusion

From La Prairie to Sainte-Julie, allow about 33 km and roughly half an hour without traffic, some twenty kilometres of it on Highway 30. That is farther than from other South Shore towns, and Vilamo is also farther from downtown Montreal; public transit, for its part, only offers a weekday transfer. If those conditions work for you, go and judge in person, starting at the sales office, 435 Geoffrion Street.
