Living in Sainte-Julie or Carignan

Thinking about a new semi-detached home near Carignan also means asking a question. What would change, day to day, if you lived in Sainte-Julie instead of Carignan? This article looks at living in Sainte-Julie or Carignan through public facts. It covers services, the outdoors, schools, transit and housing. It does not rank one city above the other.

Both cities have their strengths, and they are not alike. Carignan has about 12,600 people on 62 km². It blends residential areas with farmland. Sainte-Julie has nearly two and a half times as many people, on less land. So it is denser, and its Vilamo neighbourhood has shops within walking distance. Neither comes out ahead on all counts. Each suits a different way of life, and the right answer depends on your household and your habits.

What do the two cities already share?

Whether you choose living in Sainte-Julie or Carignan, several regional services stay the same:

  • policing: the Régie intermunicipale de police Richelieu–Saint-Laurent serves Carignan and Sainte-Julie alike;
  • French-language public schools: both cities fall under the Centre de services scolaire des Patriotes. École secondaire du Grand-Coteau, in Sainte-Julie, is part of it;
  • local transit: Carignan's taxibus is free for riders. In Sainte-Julie, local public transit is free for all;
  • big-box shopping: Promenades Saint-Bruno is the shopping neighbour of both cities. On weekends, you can get there by bus from either one.

There is one administrative difference, though. Carignan belongs to the La Vallée-du-Richelieu regional county municipality (RCM), and Sainte-Julie to Marguerite-D'Youville. The name will still ring a bell: Vilamo backs onto the Vallée du Richelieu golf club.

Carignan: rivers and heritage

The Richelieu River and the Chambly Basin border Carignan, and the L'Acadie River runs through it. The city calls itself a balance between town and country. It has plenty to offer outdoors:

  • the northern tip of Île aux Lièvres, a woodland of about 3.9 hectares recognized as an exceptional forest ecosystem. The City says it is home to 91 bird species. It has a marked trail and a lookout platform;
  • two launch points for canoes, kayaks and paddleboards, one on the Chambly Basin at Île Goyer, the other on the L'Acadie River;
  • the Route verte, cleared of snow in winter, and the Chambly Canal trail. Nearly half of that trail runs through Carignan;
  • a covered, refrigerated skating rink and a pump track.

Heritage has its place too. Fort Sainte-Thérèse, a National Historic Site of Canada, has been the site of archaeological digs since 2009. Several ancestral homes date back to the French regime. The city turned 60 in 2025. The parish municipality of Saint-Joseph-de-Chambly, created in 1855, took the name Carignan in 1965. The name is a nod to the Carignan-Salières regiment, which arrived in 1665.

Sainte-Julie: services close at hand

In Sainte-Julie, the Vilamo neighbourhood was planned around its green space. That space covers 600,000 sq ft, more than 15% of Vilamo's area. A promenade is set aside for people on foot, cyclists and electric mobility. Close by, the city offers:

  • a shopping area a short walk away. It has a pharmacy, medical services, a public market, restaurants and a Caisse Desjardins;
  • a bike network of more than 40 km. Since October 2026, there is also a new BIXI station at Parc Arthur-Gauthier;
  • Espace Tonik Nature, with a free three-year membership advertised by beacite.com;
  • Mont-Saint-Bruno National Park and its ski centre, a few minutes away.

Libraries, pools and schools: how each city does it

The two cities don't have the same facilities. Each has found its own answers:

  • library: Carignan has no municipal library. But an agreement gives its residents free access to the eight libraries in the Longueuil network. One of them, Raymond-Lévesque, is in Saint-Hubert, about 7 km from city hall. Eleven little free libraries round out the offer. Sainte-Julie has its own library;
  • swimming: Carignan residents get free access to public swims at Richelieu's heated outdoor pool. Sainte-Julie offers free swimming lessons;
  • schools: Carignan has three elementary schools, including École du Boisé, which opened in September 2024. It also has two CPE daycares. The City lists no high school within city limits;
  • health care: the City of Carignan points its residents to the CLSC du Richelieu and the Haut-Richelieu hospital. In Sainte-Julie, medical services are a short walk from Vilamo.

What's in the works on both sides

Both cities keep changing. In Carignan, a future downtown is at the concept-plan stage, with no set timeline. The plan calls for local shops, city services and a mix of housing. The Carignan-Chambly regional sports centre has been under construction since summer 2025. In Sainte-Julie, Vilamo keeps growing with six builders. They build several types of housing, from single-family homes to condos.
