Multigenerational home near Carignan: two generations, side by side

When you're looking for a new semi-detached home near Carignan, you may also be thinking about a parent who is getting older, or an adult child who would like to stay close by. The multigenerational home near Carignan is then the first idea that comes to mind: one building, two units, two generations under the same roof.

Let's be clear from the start: BÉAcité does not sell multigenerational homes. Instead, Maisons Pépin presents its BÉAcité Duo project as an appealing alternative to the intergenerational, or two-generation, concept. The idea we explore here follows from that: two generations, each in a home of its own, living next to each other. Whether the homes needed to make that happen are available is something to check with the sales representative.

This article offers no legal or financial advice; it is meant to help you ask the right questions before you commit to anything.

In Carignan, several generations under one roof

This is far from a theoretical question in Carignan. According to Statistics Canada's 2021 Census:

  • 2.9% of Carignan households, or 125 of them, are multigenerational, twice the share in Sainte-Julie (1.3%) or across Quebec (1.4%);
  • households there have 2.8 people on average, compared with 2.2 for Quebec as a whole;
  • couples with children make up 38.5% of households, the largest share of any household type;
  • according to the Institut de la statistique du Québec, young people aged 0 to 19 accounted for 26.9% of the population as of July 1, 2025.

The City also makes room for ties between age groups: the Maison des générations Ginette-Grenier, on Rue Henriette, is meant as a place open to every generation that encourages intergenerational connection. Thinking about a multigenerational home near Carignan, then, fits a very local reality.

Two-generation house or two homes: two approaches

A two-generation house puts two units in one building. It brings people closer, but it also merges a lot of things: the entrance, the lot, sometimes the costs, and the decisions that affect the property. The rules governing this type of housing are set by each municipality, and we found no public information on what Carignan's zoning allows in this regard.

The other approach is to keep two separate homes while staying close. If two neighbouring homes are available at the same time, each generation would have its own:

  • under one roof: a single building, spaces and costs that are often shared, and closeness at every moment;
  • two neighbouring homes: two separate houses, each with its own entrance, garage, basement and yard, and closeness by choice.

Questions of ownership, financing or estate planning are best taken to a notary or a financial advisor.

What is left to check with the representative?

This scenario depends entirely on what is available when you start looking. Before you build a family plan around it, ask sales director Eddy Guessous:

  1. whether two neighbouring homes, or both halves of the same semi-detached pair, are available at the same time;
  2. which ones are already built, which can be ready in about four months and which are still to be customized;
  3. which models are offered on those lots;
  4. how the all-inclusive maintenance program applies to each of the two homes;
  5. whether both purchases can follow the same timeline.

Multigenerational home near Carignan: one model per generation

With two homes, each generation can pick the floor plan that suits it. BÉAcité offers three models; here are their floor areas, taken from the plans:

  • the semi-detached bungalow, all on one level: 1,006 sq ft on the ground floor and the same in the basement, plus a 294 sq ft garage. Day-to-day life happens on a single floor, a real plus if stairs are becoming a challenge;
  • the Duo cottage: 2,018 sq ft of living space on two floors, 2,356 sq ft with the optional mezzanine, for a family that needs bedrooms; the home at 423 Geoffrion Street, a Duo, has three;
  • the Urbain model: 1,622 sq ft of living space, more compact, for a smaller household.

A bungalow for the parents and a cottage for their children's family, for example, could sit on the same street, provided the homes on offer allow it.

Daily life at two neighbouring addresses

Two homes also mean two lots. At BÉAcité, each one comes with complete landscaping, and then an all-inclusive maintenance program takes over for both: neither generation has to carry the upkeep of two properties alone. The representative will give you the details of the program.

The neighbourhood makes coming and going easier, too: a pharmacy, medical services, a public market, restaurants and a Caisse Desjardins are within walking distance, and local public transit in Sainte-Julie is free for everyone. Vilamo states that all of its homes are within 300 m of a bus stop, although near Geoffrion Street the only service is the T34 taxibus, by reservation and on weekdays only. If one of you works from home, the home at 423 has an open office; for reference, 25.3% of Carignan workers worked from home in May 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, a share similar to that of the Montreal region as a whole.

Keeping a foot in Carignan

For the generation that stays in Carignan, or that keeps its routines there, the distance remains reasonable: from city hall, Geoffrion Street is about 25 minutes away without traffic via Route 112 and highways 30 and 20. The two cities also share the same police service and the same school service centre. Conclusion

A multigenerational home near Carignan isn't the only way to bring two generations closer. BÉAcité doesn't sell one, and Maisons Pépin presents its Duo project as an alternative to the two-generation house: in practical terms, the idea would be to live in two neighbouring new semi-detached homes, each with its own entrance, garage and yard, with upkeep taken care of for both. That plan does depend on the homes available when you start: begin with a call to the representative, then a family visit, starting at the sales office at 435 Geoffrion Street.
